BMD Mixtape: Vol. 10

BMD operates on the traditional land of the Huron-Wendat, Seneca, and Mississaugas of the Credit. On September 30th we celebrated Canada’s National Truth and Reconciliation Day. Although that day has passed, I hope we continue to respect our Indigenous peoples and educate ourselves beyond one day of the year.

Here’s what I didn’t learn in school: Less than half of approximately 6000 children who died in residential schools are identified. All 2800 of their names are included in the motion version of the album art.

The art also revives KnowCanada, a conceptual campaign by BMD and developed in partnership with Studio 360 with Kurt Andersen, an arts and culture radio show from WNYC and Public Radio International. The project asserts, “Canada doesn’t need a redesign; rather, people need to be educated.” The flag’s bars, a symbol of our nation, is a perfect viewfinder to educate ourselves upon obfuscated and omitted truths.

The playlist highlights a range of languages and genres by an Indigenous artist majority. I hope it evokes a sense unease and beauty that comes with truth, growth and healing.
